LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Kirby Lester president and chief executive officer Garry Zage, R.Ph., has been named 2012 Alumnus of the Year by the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy.

The pharmacy automation provider said Tuesday that the award, the highest honor given to an alumnus, recognizes an Illinois College of Pharmacy graduate who stands as an innovator, exhibits leadership and has contributed significantly to the pharmacy profession.
A 1977 graduate of the pharmacy college, Zage has over 35 years of experience in the pharmacy industry, including more than 15 years in the field of pharmacy automation. He is the only CEO of a pharmacy automation company who is a pharmacist, according to Kirby Lester. Zage purchased Kirby Lester in 2005.
"Garry embodies what we are trying to produce in our educational programs at the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy," commented Jerry Bauman, Pharm.D., dean of the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy. "The Alumnus of the Year award stands above — as an innovator, a leader and a significant contributor to pharmacy. It’s our highest honor. Garry certainly exemplifies these qualities. His current work enables pharmacists to spend more time with patients, which is crucial as the profession embraces the professional role of the pharmacist. In addition, Garry has provided strong leadership throughout his distinguished career in a wide variety of areas, from the pharmaceutical industry to community practice to hospital practice."
