Executives from regional drug and supermarket chains from across the country met in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., earlier this month at the 2018 NACDS Regional Chain Conference.

This year’s theme, “Igniting Possibilities,” underscored the opportunity for attendees to share insights and ideas, engage in business and benefit from strategy sessions conducted by peers.

“I have a huge passion for what pharmacies and pharmacists can bring, and continuing to build trust is a key part of our future,” said NACDS chairman Alex Gourlay, co-COO of Walgreens Boots Alliance.

The event also offered moments for inspiration — including from conference speaker and Fruth Pharmacy president Lynne Fruth, who called on attendees to take action to stem the rising tide of drug abuse. “Be courageous. Lead with passion. Respond with innovation. Demostrate compassion,” she said.

Besides offering a forum for discussion on the retail pharmacy industry’s business prospects today and going forward, the conference helped mark the 85th anniversary of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores.

“An anniversary is a great time to look at NACDS through the eyes of those who created it,” NACDS president and CEO Steve Anderson told attendees. “A National Association of Chain Drug Stores did not exist, and they decided it needed to.”

Anderson also stressed the importance for industry stakeholders to work together through NACDS on pharmacy and front-end concerns. “Whatever the issue, NACDS is totally committed to bringing about workable and successful solutions that only can be achieved by true collaboration,” he said.
