SAN DIEGO — Cosmederm Bioscience Inc. said new clinical research finds that its TriCalm topical hydrogel bests leading over-the-counter treatments in providing itch relief.
The company said Tuesday that a study published in Clinical, Cosmetic, and Investigational Dermatology concluded that TriCalm hydrogel is superior to diphenhydramine 2% and hydrocortisone 1% in reducing itch intensity and duration. Using a cowhide itch model, the study was conducted to assess the antipruritic effect of TriCalm’s OTC, steroid-free hydrogel formulation.
The research found that TriCalm produced the highest itch reduction in all three areas measured: itch intensity, itch duratio, and total itch perceived, a combined measure of intensity and duration representing the overall itch experienced by the subject, Cosmederm Bioscience noted. In addition, the study revealed that TriCalm was six times more effective than diphenhydramine 2% and eight times more effective than hydrocortisone 1% at reducing the sensation of itch on the subjects’ skin.
“The results of this study are a testament to TriCalm’s value as the most effective over-the-counter itch relief treatment,” stead Sean Edwards, president and chief executive officer at Cosmederm Bioscience. “They validate our claim that TriCalm is more effective at relieving itch than hydrocortisone 1%, providing fast-acting itch relief without the potential side effects of steroid-based creams.”
TriCalm is sold at Walgreens, CVS/pharmacy, Rite Aid and Walmart online and in stores nationwide.
