NEW YORK — With consumers on high alert heading into flu season, a number of supermarket chains are offering grocery and other product discounts in tandem with flu shot programs through their pharmacies.

Food and drug retailers promoting in-store savings with flu immunizations include Jewel-Osco, Safeway, A&P, Pathmark, Waldbaum’s, Super Fresh and H.E. Butt.

Saying that "an ounce of prevention can amount to big savings," Jewel-Osco this week began offering customers who get a seasonal flu shot at its pharmacy a 20% discount on a future grocery shopping trip.

The vaccinations, offered for $24.99, are available by appointment or on a walk-in basis, and select 24-hour pharmacy locations can provide flu shots around the clock, the company said.

After receiving a flu shot, customers get a 20% discount coupon when they use one of the following services designed to foster a healthier lifestyle: transfer or fill a new prescription; receive another immunization, such as for pneumonia, shingles, tetanus or meningitis; complete a private medication review with a Jewel-Osco pharmacist; complete Jewel-Osco’s "Tools for Living Healthy With Diabetes" education program; or get an in-store health screening for cholesterol, thyroid dysfunction (TSH), prostate cancer (PSA), blood glucose or A1C.

In addition to the grocery savings offer, customers will also get a flu, cough and cold survival kit valued at $30 that includes free samples, coupons and tips for staying healthy during the cold and flu season.

"While the opportunity for immediate grocery savings can be significant to many of our customers, the long-term benefits of health maintenance and preventative care measures are far greater," pharmacist Jeff Bregar, manager of integrated clinical services for Jewel-Osco, said in a statement.

Safeway, meanwhile, is offering customers a 10% savings on their next grocery purchase if they get a seasonal flu shot through one of its pharmacies or clinics.

A&P’s family of stores — including the A&P, Pathmark, Waldbaum’s and Super Fresh banners — is offering in-store savings of over $50 in a free coupon book for customers who get a flu shot through one of the chains’ pharmacies. Likewise, H.E. Butt is promoting a free health and wellness coupon book with its pharmacy flu shot campaign.

Some other supermarket chains are promoting discounted flu shots for shopper loyalty card holders.

Winn-Dixie Stores, for instance, is offering seasonal flu shots for $19 to Customer Reward Card holders and for $24 to non-cardholders. And Ahold USA’s Stop & Shop and Giant Food chains last week started offering loyalty card holders a $10 discount on flu shots, for a final cost of $20.
