SHERIDAN, Wyo. — The global sustainable pharmaceutical packaging market is projected to grow from $114.5 billion in 2025 to $270.4 billion by 2031, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 15.4%, according to a new Wissen Research report.

The study identifies growing environmental concerns, stricter packaging regulations, and expanding corporate sustainability commitments as key drivers of the adoption of recyclable, bio-based, and lightweight pharmaceutical packaging materials.

“Drug manufacturers are increasingly adopting recyclable, bio-based, and lightweight packaging materials to reduce carbon emissions and plastic waste while maintaining product safety and regulatory compliance,” said Mayur Jain, research expert at Wissen Research.

The report notes that advances in materials science, circular-economy initiatives, and rising demand for environmentally friendly healthcare solutions are accelerating the shift toward more sustainable packaging across the pharmaceutical supply chain. Innovations such as recyclable monomaterials, bio-based polymers, improved barrier coatings, molded-fiber packaging, and smart packaging technologies are helping manufacturers balance sustainability goals with product protection and regulatory requirements.

Among the market’s primary growth drivers are tougher environmental regulations, pharmaceutical companies’ environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, expanding pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical production, and increased consumer demand for sustainable healthcare products.

The report also highlights ongoing challenges. Sustainable packaging materials must meet stringent pharmaceutical requirements for safety, sterility and barrier performance, often requiring extensive testing and regulatory validation. Higher costs for recyclable and bio-based materials, limited recycling infrastructure and the complexity of multi-material pharmaceutical packaging continue to hinder broader adoption.

Recent industry partnerships underscore growing investment in circular economy initiatives. In April, Amcor plc and Berry Global Group completed their merger, combining resources to expand recyclable healthcare packaging technologies and increase the use of post-consumer recycled materials. Earlier this year, Becton Dickinson and Company and Envetec Sustainable Technologies completed a feasibility study demonstrating closed-loop recycling of healthcare plastics, including syringes, PET tubes and medical packaging materials.

North America is expected to retain the largest share of the market, supported by stringent environmental regulations and strong ESG commitments among pharmaceutical and packaging companies. The Asia-Pacific region is projected to grow fastest, driven by expanding pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity, healthcare investment, and government sustainability initiatives in countries including China, India, and Japan.

By product type, plastic bottles accounted for the largest market share in 2025, while recyclable packaging led all process categories due to its compatibility with existing recycling systems and pharmaceutical safety requirements.
