MONTREAL — Health system pharmacies face increasing operational challenges as limited end-to-end visibility across inventory, suppliers, and care sites hampers both efficiency and patient care, according to new research from Tecsys.

Findings from the report “The Visibility Crisis in Health System Pharmacies” show that gaps in pharmacy data integration are forcing teams to make reactive decisions at a time when they are under increasing pressure to manage drug shortages, control costs, and support continuity of care. Without enterprise-wide visibility, pharmacy operations remain limited as a support function rather than becoming a strategic driver within health systems.

“It’s clear from the findings that we’re at a critical inflection point in pharmacy operations,” said Valerie Bandy, vice president of pharmacy solutions at Tecsys. “Pharmacy teams are expected to manage shortages and control costs while supporting care delivery, but without end-to-end visibility, they’re forced into reactive decision-making that ultimately affects patient care.”

The report highlights that combining pharmacy data with larger enterprise decision-making systems can help health organizations strengthen resilience, lessen disruptions, and sustain patient care continuity.

The study is based on a nationally representative online survey conducted in October 2025 of 201 health system executives, pharmacy leaders, and supply chain leaders. All respondents worked within health systems generating at least $1 billion in annual revenue.
