DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens is expanding its weight management services to include virtual care support for patients navigating insurance coverage for GLP-1 medications and pharmacist outreach for those starting treatment.
Through Walgreens Weight Management, eligible patients can connect online with a doctor or nurse practitioner and receive a prescription for an FDA-approved GLP-1 medication for weight loss. Virtual visits cost $49 and require no subscription. The cost of medication is separate.
The service now helps patients check commercial insurance prescription coverage and complete prior authorizations as needed. Eligible participants in the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program can also connect with virtual care providers for assistance with eligibility, prior authorizations and treatment plans. Patients already taking a GLP-1 medication for weight loss can use the service for ongoing treatment support.
Walgreens said its pharmacists will reach out to patients who begin filling a GLP-1 prescription to answer medication questions, share educational resources, and connect them with additional support.
“Staying on a GLP-1 medication can be challenging for many patients,” said Rick Gates, Walgreens’ chief pharmacy and external affairs officer. “Walgreens pharmacists can support patients from the moment they begin exploring whether a GLP-1 medication may be right for them and throughout their treatment journey.”
The company has also introduced an online GLP-1 resource hub offering information on treatment options and costs. The hub connects patients to Walgreens’ virtual care services, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, and manufacturer savings card information available through Rx Savings Finder. It also provides information on products that may help relieve side effects.
