ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Walgreen Co. is supporting the American Diabetes Association’s CheckUp America initiative, which aims to help consumers in the prevention of type 2 diabetes.
The American Diabetes Association said Thursday that Walgreens, in reaffirming its commitment as a national strategic partner to the organization, will support activities designed to help those at highest risk for type 2 diabetes become more aware and take action to "Stop Diabetes before it starts."
In addition, the drug chain will support the expanded distribution of patient education materials and the development of a transit advertising campaign in certain markets to urge consumers to check their risk for diabetes.
"Through our commitment to health and wellness for our customers and employees, we have been delighted to help support the American Diabetes Association over the past year in raising critical awareness about type 2 diabetes prevention," Kermit Crawford, president of pharmacy, health and wellness at Walgreens, said in a statement. "We are, once again, committed to continuing our educational and fundraising efforts with the association in 2013 and are excited to be part of the movement to Stop Diabetes."
For American Diabetes Month in November, Walgreens will be conducting a PIN pad donation campaign when a debit or credit card is used for payment at its nearly 8,000 drug stores nationwide. The chain also will participate in select American Diabetes Association Expos, a free event that educates the public about healthy eating, active living and changing the future of diabetes.
Walgreens, too, will again be a national sponsor of "Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes" as well as encourage its employees to get out and walk as part of the retailer’s national team for Step Out.
"Education is crucial for the prevention of type 2 diabetes. We are excited about our continued collaboration and having Walgreens on board to help us further our mission in stopping this deadly disease," stated Larry Hausner, chief executive officer of the American Diabetes Association. "Since the alliance was formed in 2011, Walgreens has raised more than $1.6 million for the association and has helped us reach out to communities with critical information through our educational initiatives."
