Walmart expands associate benefits with $0 prescriptions, specialized care for rare conditions and paid NICU leave

Walmart is adding three key enhancements to employee benefits.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart is expanding its benefits offerings for U.S. associates with a series of enhancements designed to increase access to affordable healthcare, specialized treatment and family support. The new initiatives, which begin rolling out in late 2026 and 2027, include a new $0 prescription drug tier, a Rare Conditions Center of Excellence and a paid Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) leave benefit. These enhancements were announced as part of Walmart’s annual enrollment season and reflect the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting the health and well-being of its workforce.

“We are excited to share upcoming changes to our benefits during this Annual Enrollment season,” said Donna Morris, executive vice president and chief people officer for Walmart. “We’re adding even more ways for associates and their families to live better through comprehensive and affordable healthcare and benefits.”

Morris announced the new benefits in a letter to 1.6M U.S. associates.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, Walmart will introduce a Zero Dollar Prescription Tier for eligible associates. The new benefit will provide access to more than 250 generic, brand-name and specialty medications at no cost, including certain insulin products and inhalers. The program is intended to reduce out-of-pocket expenses while helping associates manage both chronic and acute health conditions.

Walmart is also expanding its Centers of Excellence (COE) program with the addition of a Rare Conditions Center of Excellence. Through partnerships with leading healthcare providers, including Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, the new COE will offer associates access to specialized care for conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Associates and eligible dependents enrolled in most Walmart medical plans who are undergoing evaluation or have received a diagnosis for a covered condition will have no-cost access to in-person specialist consultations, treatment reviews and care recommendations. As with Walmart’s existing Centers of Excellence, travel expenses for patients and an adult caregiver will also be covered.

In addition, Walmart is introducing a dedicated paid NICU leave benefit to support families with newborns requiring intensive medical care. Effective Nov. 17, 2026, eligible associates whose newborns are admitted to a NICU within the first 28 days after birth and are receiving inpatient care will be eligible for up to 12 weeks of paid leave.

The new NICU leave can be combined with other Walmart leave programs, including maternity and parental leave benefits. When stacked with existing programs, eligible frontline associates may receive up to 28 weeks of paid leave when a birth includes a NICU stay.

The enhancements build on Walmart’s broader effort to provide associates with access to high-quality healthcare resources. Through its Centers of Excellence program, associates have access to specialized treatment and second opinions from some of the nation’s leading medical institutions at little to no cost.

One example is Tasheka Saunders, an administrative assistant at a Walmart distribution center, who turned to Walmart’s Cancer Center of Excellence after being diagnosed with cancer in 2023. Through the program, Mayo Clinic specialists provided a second opinion, revised treatment plan and care that ultimately helped her achieve a cancer-free outcome.

“I am alive today because of Walmart’s Centers of Excellence,” Saunders said.

The latest benefits enhancements underscore Walmart’s continuing investment in healthcare affordability, expanded access to expert medical care and family-focused support programs for its U.S. workforce.
