COLUMBIA, Md. — Health technology provider WellDoc has entered a commercial partnership with LifeScan Inc., a unit of Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Care Cos., to deliver a digital health solution for type 2 diabetes nationwide.
Plans call for the companies to integrate WellDoc’s clinically validated BlueStar diabetes management platform and mobile application with LifeScan’s OneTouch Verio Flex blood glucose monitoring system. The combined offering will seek to create a comprehensive, data-driven and payer-reimbursed program for type 2 diabetes management.
WellDoc noted that its BlueStar platform is the first Food and Drug Administration-approved digital therapeutic for adults with type 2 diabetes. LifeScan’s OneTouch Verio Flex monitoring system features built-in Bluetooth Smart Technology and the OneTouch Reveal digital system.
“We’ve made considerable progress in our important relationship with LifeScan Inc., which began earlier this year via a development agreement and a Johnson & Johnson Innovation-JJDC Inc. investment in WellDoc. Together, WellDoc and LifeScan will provide those living with type 2 diabetes a best-in-class diabetes management solution with robust data analytics powered by BlueStar’s patented clinical and behavioral engine,” stated Kevin McRaith, chief executive officer of WellDoc.
“We will facilitate national adoption of this innovative first-in-class digital health solution,” McRaith commented. “Our goal is to help make a difference in the lives of millions of Americans living with this chronic disease while bringing the U.S. health care system cost-savings opportunities.”
BlueStar provides type 2 diabetes patients with lifestyle and behavioral support to help them self-manage their condition, while assisting health care teams in making timely clinical decisions.
With the platform, patients enter specific information, such as their blood glucose levels and carbohydrate intake, as well as have their health and wellness data synchronized from wearables. Through the application, they then receive customized guidance, messages, educational tips and motivation in real time, whether or not their smartphone or tablet is connected to wi-fi or not.
