ST. LOUIS — A new solution from Wolters Kluwer Health is aimed at helping retail pharmacies cut down on the time spent dealing with insurance issues.

The health care information service provider said Thursday that Facts & Comparisons, its drug information resource, is now offering the optional Drug Plans Module, designed to aid pharmacies in streamlining workflow and supporting patient needs while better managing insurance requirements.

According to Wolters Kluwer, the module provides easy online access to formularies, preferred medications and other plan-specific details for more than 5,500 insurance drug plans, including Medicaid and Medicare.

Available as an add-on to subscriptions to the Facts & Comparisons eAnswers online drug reference, the Drug Plans Module enables pharmacists to view formulary status for prescription drugs on 5,500 plans across the nation, compare tier levels and reimbursement policies of drugs within the same class, and use the Plan List Manager to create a preferred list of drug plans for a specific geographic region.

What’s more, the module reduces the time pharmacists spend on communicating with insurance companies and doctor’s offices over plan issues and alternative therapies, allowing them to devote more time to on transactions and pharmacy patient care. The solution, too, facilitates compliance with insurance program policies and supports drug regimen management by giving pharmacists tools to help patients choose maintainable drug therapies.

"The more time pharmacists spend on the phone and on hold with insurance companies and medical offices, the less time they are spending helping their patients and managing revenue for the pharmacy," noted David Del Toro, vice president and general manager of clinical drug information at Wolters Kluwer Health Clinical Solutions.

"The Drug Plans Module for Facts & Comparisons eAnswers is built with the unique challenges of the retail pharmacist in mind," he stated. "With efficient access to information on so many drug plans, it allows pharmacists to more effectively meet the medical, financial and practical needs of their patients while complying with plan policies."
