Bartell Drugs unveils plans for new store

Bartell Drugs plans to open a new store in 2016 at Ballard Commons, a mixed-use development in northwestern Seattle.

SEATTLE — Bartell Drugs plans to open a new store in 2016 at Ballard Commons, a mixed-use development in northwestern Seattle.

The regional drug chain said Monday that the 14,000-square-foot store, which will have underground parking, would be its third in the city’s Ballard neighborhood and will be the development’s major retail anchor.

Ballard Commons will be developed on the site currently occupied by the Bartell Drugs store at 5605 22nd Avenue NW. The retailer said that with the closure of that location in January 2015, it will continue to serve the store’s customers at the recently opened Bartell Drugs store at 15th & Market.

Earlier this year, Bartell Drugs opened one of its next-generation format stores at 1500 NW Market Street, introducing new services, product offerings and customer convenience features.

"This is another milestone in our longtime commitment to Ballard. During construction of the new store, we look forward to serving customers at our Market Street location," George Bartell, chairman and chief executive officer of Bartell Drugs, said in a statement.

Ballard Commons, a development by Seattle-based Henbart LLC, is slated to feature two contemporary, companion buildings with 80 apartments, four townhomes that front Ballard Commons Park and about 21,000 square feet of loft-style office space and 21,000 square feet of retail along 22nd Avenue, with Bartell Drugs as the anchor tenant. The site is designed to include courtyard areas and landscaped grounds, giving it a campus-style feel, according to Bartell.

Overall, Bartell Drugs currently operates 63 drug stores in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties in Washington’s Puget Sound area.
