NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. — The cough, cold and flu (CCF) category continues to see a major shift, with many consumers looking for “cleaner” products that deliver convenience, transparency and dependable symptom relief without compromise.
This was true during the 2024-2025 flu season in the U.S., which was particularly severe, with influenza activity reaching its highest level since the 2009 pandemic. It was classified as a “high severity” season for all age groups, the first time this has happened since 2017-2018, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“It was a significant cold and flu season overall, with some experts calling it the most intense in more than a decade. We saw strong consumer demand across our CCF portfolio, especially Oscillococcinum, with notable sales spikes in January and February,” said MaryEllen Tefft, vice president of FDM for Boiron USA. “What stood out for us was that Oscillococcinum’s continued relevance beyond peak season. Consumers are increasingly reaching for it at the first sign of flu-like symptoms year-round, reinforcing its value as a consistent item on shelf.”

She said the company has added a new product to its portfolio. “We are excited to bring Chestal Cough & Mucus Pellets to the mass market. This line extension of our trusted Chestal Honey Cough Syrup offers the same multi-symptom relief in a convenient, travel-friendly pellet format. Designed for consumers who prefer on-the-go options and easy dosing without water, these meltaway pellets expand our CCF portfolio to complement key products like Oscillococcinum. Boiron’s robust lineup provides retailers with a well-rounded set of homeopathic options that address a variety of symptoms and consumer preferences across the category.”
Tefft said Boiron continues to see a clear trend of consumer interest in homeopathic and plant-based products, especially in cold and flu care. “Many consumers are prioritizing self-care and ingredient transparency, and are seeking alternatives that align with those preferences. Products like Oscillococcinum meet this demand by offering symptom relief without artificial additives.”
She pointed out that homeopathic medicines are increasingly providing solutions for consumers seeking relief, especially those who prefer products with plant-based and other pure active ingredients. “Oscillococcinum, for example, is a popular choice for flu-like symptoms, helping to alleviate body aches, headache, fever, chills and fatigue associated with the flu. Because these symptoms can occur any time of year, we’re seeing steady demand for Oscillococcinum as part of consumers’ wellness routines, not just peak season.”
Tefft added that allergy season has been active, with extended pollen cycles driving traffic to the allergy set earlier than usual. “Retailers carrying Boiron’s AllergyCalm have been well positioned to capitalize. It’s a nondrowsy, multi-symptom solution that appeals to shoppers looking to move away from conventional antihistamines.”
