BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam’s Club this weekend is slated to hold free diabetes screenings for adults and children.
The Walmart warehouse club chain said that this Saturday, Sept. 10, all of its more than 500 pharmacy locations will provide the diabetes checkups for members and nonmembers from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The free screenings will include glucose, A1C, blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) tests, valued at more than $150, according to Sam’s Club.
In addition, the wholesale club retailer is offering free samples of Glucerna Shakes by Abbott Laboratories and Zeiss Wipes plus Zeiss liquid spectacle lens cleaner by Carl Zeiss Vision.
Sam’s Club reported that according to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 26 million U.S. adults and children have diabetes, and another 79 million people are considered prediabetic. The chain also noted that early detection and treatment for diabetes can help people lower their risk of serious complications that can include stroke, heart disease, blindness, amputation and kidney failure.
"Diabetes is fast becoming an epidemic in this country, and it’s important that concerned Sam’s Club members ‘know their numbers’ — blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, etc. — to seek out solutions for maintaining good health," Jill Turner-Mitchael, senior vice president of health and wellness at Sam’s Club, said in a statement. "At Sam’s Club, our free diabetic health screenings raise awareness, help families identify their risks for diabetes and educate the communities we serve on ways to treat, prevent and delay the onset of type 2 diabetes."
Sam’s Club said that this year its U.S. clubs have provided more than 250,000 free health screenings. After the diabetes event, the chain plans to offer free women’s health screenings on Oct. 8. The health checks will include TSH (thyroid testing), blood pressure and BMI tests.
