NEW YORK — Duane Reade is making it easier for students, faculty and staff at Manhattan’s Hunter College to receive H1N1 flu vaccinations.

The metropolitan New York drug store chain said Wednesday that it will provide discounted immunizations to members of the Hunter College community who present a valid ID and a voucher at the Duane Reade H1N1 clinic location on 74th Street and 3rd Avenue. The institution is the largest senior college in the City University of New York (CUNY) system

Hunter College president Jennifer Raab has agreed to fully fund the first 1,000 vaccinations that Duane Reade will set aside for Hunter students, faculty and staff. She also plans to join several students in receiving the vaccine at the Duane Reade location on Wednesday.

This announcement comes during National Influenza Immunization Week, an effort by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to educate, encourage and engage Americans on the importance of vaccinating against the H1N1 and seasonal flu viruses.

"We are very pleased that we were selected to perform this important public service for Hunter College students," Frank Scorpiniti, senior vice president of pharmacy operations at Duane Reade, said in a statement. "As we know, it is very important for all New Yorkers — particularly younger generations who are especially vulnerable — to remain vigilant in protecting themselves from the H1N1 virus."

Duane Reade announced last week that it has expanded availability of H1N1 shots throughout New York City’s boroughs and that it’s offering its H1N1 vaccine services to New York businesses and their employees.
