Faster Prime delivery strengthens Amazon Pharmacy’s position

In 2025, prime delivery speeds hit record levels. Amazon uses the same infrastructure to expedite prescription delivery.

SEATTLE — Amazon.com, Inc. announced it shipped over 13 billion items worldwide to Prime members in 2025, setting a new record for delivery speed for the third consecutive year. In the U.S., Prime members received more than 8 billion items the same or next day, a growth of over 30% year over year, with an increasing portion being healthcare-related items.

Amazon emphasized the expansion of same-day prescription delivery through Amazon Pharmacy as a vital part of its faster fulfillment network. By utilizing its existing same-day system, the company stated it can deliver medications within hours at no extra charge to Prime members, including those in remote and difficult-to-reach areas. Amazon Pharmacy also continues to provide 24/7 pharmacist access and transparent upfront pricing, positioning speed as a key advantage alongside service transparency.

Groceries and everyday essentials made up about half of all same- or next-day deliveries to U.S. Prime members in 2025, but Amazon highlighted that prescription medications and healthcare essentials are increasingly benefiting from the same logistics capabilities.

“By expanding our fast, free delivery options to rural communities and adding fresh groceries and prescription medications to our offering, we’re proving that members don’t have to choose between speed, selection, and savings,” said Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores.

Rural expansion strengthens pharmacy reach

Amazon announced a $4 billion investment in its rural delivery network, which helped expand same-day and next-day service to over 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural areas across 44 states. Existing rural delivery stations were transformed into hybrid hubs that can now handle a broader range of items, including healthcare essentials and prescriptions.

The company reported that same-day usage in rural areas nearly doubled in 2025, reflecting increased demand for quick access to essentials that previously needed in-person pharmacy visits or longer shipping times.

AI-driven fulfillment supports healthcare speed

Amazon credited AI-powered inventory forecasting with helping to place medications and health products closer to patients, enabling shorter delivery windows while maintaining a broad selection. The company said these improvements result from inventory placement rather than changes to employee workloads, with the same picking and packing processes used for rapid and standard deliveries.

Amazon stated that U.S. Prime members saved an average of $550 last year on fast, free delivery, while Prime members worldwide saved an estimated $105 billion. As pharmacy access, speed, and convenience continue to merge, Amazon has made same-day prescription delivery a growing part of Prime’s value for healthcare consumers.
