BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — Former CVS Caremark Corp. executive Douglas Ghertner has been named president at change:healthcare.

The health care cost transparency firm said Tuesday that Ghertner, previously senior vice president for client solutions at CVS Caremark, assumes the president’s post effective immediately.

He is the second ex-CVS executive to join change:healthcare in the past couple of months. In early May, change:healthcare announced that the former president of CVS Caremark’s pharmacy benefit management unit, Howard McLure, was named chairman and chief executive officer.

Change:healthcare noted that Ghertner’s strong background in corporate strategy and operations will further solidify the company as a leader in providing cost transparency solutions to businesses and their employees. With more than 14 years specializing in corporate and product strategy as well as growth of existing and emerging markets, he will oversee change:healthcare’s sales and operations and lead the company’s efforts to expand its product offering as it grows its national customer base.

"After working so closely with businesses and consumers on the benefit plan side of the business, I recognize how important it is to provide easy access to the missing link: understandable and personalized health pricing information," Ghertner said in a statement. "It’s exciting to be joining a team that’s not only enabling companies of all sizes to curb their rising health care costs but also allowing consumers to keep more of their hard-earned wages in their pockets by making more informed decisions about their care."

At CVS Caremark, Ghertner was responsible for PBM product and service offerings sold to more than 2,000 employers, health plans and government organizations, with a focus on ensuring that clients and their participants maximized the value of their pharmacy benefit, according to change:healthcare. He has held a variety of positions since 2003 during his tenure at CVS, including vice president for strategic development, vice president for product innovation and consumer programs and senior vice president for client solutions.

"Doug’s experience at CVS Caremark has given him a deep understanding of how to successfully overcome client challenges as well as manage enormous data sets to create compelling product offerings," stated McLure. "As we continue to develop and hone [our cost transparency solution] Transparency Messenger, Doug’s in-depth knowledge of the market will further strengthen our leadership in providing clients with the actionable information they demand."
