HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Kmart Pharmacy has started offering flu shots on a walk-in basis through clinics at more than 900 stores.

The discount store chain, part of Sears Holdings Corp., said Monday that its annual flu clinic program runs until Nov. 15. The seasonal flu vaccines cost $25, and those who purchase a flu immunization will also get a coupon book worth up to $45 in savings and a 10% off shopping pass valid through Dec. 4 on consumables, health and beauty care purchases.

Kmart Pharmacy noted that this year it also will offer the new Fluzone High-Dose vaccine for people age 65 and older. The higher-dose flu vaccination, which costs $45, will provide four times the amount of antigen contained in regular flu shots, which according to the Department of Health and Human Services is designed to create a stronger immune response through more antibodies in the person getting the vaccine, Kmart said.

Although the start of flu season often hits its peak in November, Kmart Pharmacy is urging people to get vaccinated soon because everyone’s system reacts differently to the shot, adding that for most people antibodies that protect against influenza viruses develop about two weeks after they get inoculated.

"Following a 2009 flu season that saw significant outbreaks, including the H1N1 virus, Kmart Pharmacy is encouraging customers to get their vaccinations early in the season, especially since there is an incubation period before becoming fully effective," Robb Ayshford, divisional vice president of pharmacy administration for Kmart, said in a statement. "The Kmart Pharmacy walk-in flu clinics are family friendly, have knowledgeable on-site pharmacists that can answer flu- and health-related questions, and carry a range of supplies to help customers stay healthy during the winter season."

Kmart operates more than 1,000 pharmacies in its discount stores nationwide.
