Steve Anderson, president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, has often noted the organization’s good fortune in having the right leaders in the right place at the right time. The observation was usually related to the transition from one NACDS chairman to another, but it applies equally to the other members of the board, which is composed of senior executives from the full spectrum of pharmacy retailers — supermarkets, discount stores and warehouse clubs, as well as drug chains — represented by the association.

The continuity of strong leadership at the association has proven its worth yet again with the recent enactment of PBM reform by Congress. Current NACDS chairman Rick Gates of Walgreens led the charge in pushing the legislation across the finish line by building on the efforts of his predecessors, including Walmart’s Kevin Host and CARE Pharmacies’ Mike Wysong. When Dave Warner of KPH Healthcare Services succeeds Gates at the NACDS Annual Meeting, he can be counted on to take the next step in the fight for additional measures to rein in PBMs. At the same time, the association continues to rejuvenate the board with new members, including Albertsons’ Anthony DalPonte, who was elected last April.
