WASHINGTON — The National Retail Federation is helping to launch a new coalition to establish standards for the responsible use of artificial intelligence as businesses increasingly integrate the technology into their operations.
NRF has become a founding member of the Partnership for Assurance, Credibility, and Trust on AI (PACT AI), which is bringing together enterprises, technical experts, AI insurers, and civil society organizations to develop approaches to evaluating the safety, security, and reliability of AI systems.
The initiative comes as AI adoption expands across retail, including technologies that interact with consumers, support employees, and improve business operations. NRF said the coalition will give businesses a role in shaping policies and best practices as AI capabilities continue to evolve.
“Retailers are at the forefront of adopting AI to better serve their customers, support their employees and strengthen their businesses,” said Caroline Reppert, vice president of AI and technology policy at NRF. “This partnership will give NRF members a meaningful voice in the development of standards and best practices that help businesses deploy AI responsibly and at scale.”
PACT AI is focusing its efforts on policy development and advocacy, professionalizing the AI assurance sector, and expanding the market for services that independently assess AI systems.
“AI assurance helps ensure those technologies work as intended and deliver for the customers and employees who rely on them,” said Bri Treece, executive director of PACT AI.
Treece said NRF’s participation will help the coalition develop an approach to AI assurance that can work for retailers of all sizes as adoption of the technology continues to grow.
