MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Rexall has teamed up with the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation for the launch of Gi BodyGuard, a free mobile application to help consumers track their gastrointestinal health.

The GI Bodyguard mobile app is described as a "digital diary for digestive health."

Developed by the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation (CDHF) in conjunction with digestive health and disease experts and with the support of Rexall, the Gi BodyGuard allows information to be easily shared with a doctor, a pharmacist or other health care providers during an appointment or by e-mailing a self-generating summary in advance of an appointment.

CDHF described the mobile app as a "digital diary for digestive health." Gi BodyGuard contains symptom, stool, pain, food/weight and medication trackers, as well as a gastrointestinal health history form. It also offers reminders for medications, appointments and water.

"Rexall’s continued commitment to the wellness of its patients and customers includes their digestive health, and we’re excited to support the development of this innovative app," Tracey Phillips, national director of pharmacy services and marketing for Rexall, said in a statement.

"Our dedicated team of health care professionals is headed by expert pharmacists who provide valuable counsel surrounding symptoms, medications, treatment and relief," Phillips added. "In-store takeaway tools, such as our Digestive Health Rexall Resource Guide, created in conjunction with the CDHF, and online resources available at rexall.ca further enable Rexall to be an active and engaged partner in the journey to living better and healthier lives."

Gi BodyGuard, for Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices, is available for free download from the iTunes App Store.

"By bringing digestive health into the new digital age, Gi BodyGuard will fundamentally change the way patients and physicians communicate. We thank Rexall for working closely with us to help Canadians take control of their digestive health while keeping them informed and educated," stated Dr. Richard Fedorak, CDHF president and associate vice president of research at the University of Alberta. "The more information provided to a physician before a patient enters the office, the better armed we are to treat our patients more effectively and efficiently," he noted.
