GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. — Kinney Drugs Inc. has promoted chief operating officer Jim Spencer to president.

The regional drug chain said Friday that the move expands Spencer’s role at the company. He will now be responsible for the total customer experience and strategic growth of the chain’s retail drug stores.
In addition to overseeing pharmacy and retail operations, marketing, and merchandising, Spencer also will assume oversight of logistics. He will continue to report to Bridget-ann Hart, president of Kinney Healthcare Services.
"Jim continually demonstrates the quality of leadership and high standards that have been an integral part of the success of our company," Craig Painter, chairman and chief executive officer of Kinney Drugs, said in a statement. "Combining all the functions that directly impact the profitability of our stores under Jim’s proven leadership will better position us to grow our business and enhance the overall customer experience."
Spencer was promoted to COO last August after having served as vice president of retail operations. He joined Kinney Drugs in 2010 and has more than 20 years of operations experience in the retail industry.
This year, Kinney Drugs is slated to finish a long-term migration to a new store design. The chain, now its 98 locations in central and northern New York and Vermont, began revamping its stores more than five years ago to better cater to its primary shopper: women ages 35 and older.
For example, a new 11,550-square-foot store opened in the Eastwood neighborhood of Syracuse, N.Y., features an expanded pharmacy department wutg a broader range of health care products and services, as well as a pharmacist consultation area and a pharmacy drive-through. The store also features a wider selection of convenience products, including an bigger assortment of personal care, beauty and cosmetics items, groceries and beverages, pet supplies, clothing, seasonal items and a digital photo center.
