DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. is now offering H1N1 "swine flu" immunizations at more than 50 pharmacies in Louisiana, following up on its rollout of the vaccine in Salt Lake City early last month.
The drug store chain said Tuesday that the Louisiana stores, located in 31 parishes across the state, are making available both the injectable and nasal spray H1N1 vaccines.
Costing $18 each, the H1N1 vaccinations are being offered on a walk-in basis or by appointment, and each location with H1N1 supply will also conduct a weekly vaccination clinic, according to the company.
Walgreens said it plans to offer H1N1 immunizations at more locations throughout Louisiana as additional supply becomes available.
In addition, Take Care health clinics at five Walgreens stores in the greater New Orleans area are offering the H1N1 vaccinations on a walk-in basis.
The company said Walgreens and its Take Care Health Systems subsidiary are working closely with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals to serve as a distribution partner for the H1N1 vaccine and as a community resource for information on H1N1 immunization.
Walgreens said its pharmacists in Louisiana can provide immunizations to those age 9 and older. The H1N1 vaccinations are being offered to residents in the priority groups as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which include pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months, health care and emergency medical services personnel, people 6 months to 24 years old, and people ages 25 to 64 with health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza.

"We’re proud to partner with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals by providing convenient, affordable access to H1N1 vaccinations, furthering our commitment to helping individuals and their families stay well this flu season."
In early November, Walgreens began providing H1N1 shots at 18 drug stores in the Salt Lake City area. The company said at the time that, based on supply, it may offer the vaccinations at other stores in the area.
