Walmart opens “Store of the Future” in Texas

This launch marks a milestone in Walmart’s strategy to convert over 150 stores nationwide in the coming years, reinforcing its commitment to retail modernization and community growth.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart announced today the grand opening of its newest Supercenter in Cypress, Texas — its first ground-up store in four years and its first U.S. “Store of the Future.” This launch marks a key milestone in Walmart’s broader strategy to build or convert more than 150 stores across the country over the next several years, reinforcing its long-term commitment to retail modernization and community growth.

Built from the ground up with the customer experience at its core, the Cypress Supercenter showcases cutting-edge technology, streamlined layouts, and an expanded range of products and services—all designed to help customers shop how, when, and where they want.

“This isn’t just a ribbon cutting. It’s a commitment to the future, an investment in a community and new job opportunities,” said John Furner, President and CEO of Walmart U.S. “I’m proud of our associates in Cypress who brought this to reality.”

Highlights of the Cypress Supercenter:

  • Digital-first shopping experience, including in-store QR codes that unlock exclusive content and product information.
  • Elevated departments in Fashion, Home, Baby, and Pets, plus regional favorites such as a Hispanic bakery section, fresh tortilla maker, sushi bar, and Dunkin’.
  • Enhanced services such as a full-service fuel station, updated Pharmacy with Health Services Room and Drive-Thru, Vision Center, Auto Care Center, and a Mother’s Room.
  • Advanced omni-channel capabilities, including Curbside Pickup, Fast and Express Delivery, and InHome delivery, with real-time engagement through the Walmart App.
  • Store-wide digital shelf labels and refreshed Walmart branding for a modern retail experience.

“This store was built with the customer in mind. It’s part of a larger transformation happening across our stores as we reimagine what shopping looks like for the future. It shows what’s possible when innovation meets intention,” Furner said.

Beyond the retail innovations, the new Supercenter is also a powerful engine for local economic growth, creating over 300 new jobs and partnering with Texas-based suppliers and service providers.

“A new store means new opportunities.” said Furner. “Not only for associates starting or continuing a career, but for small businesses and service partners that will grow alongside the store.”

The Cypress opening is one of several planned store openings and transformations in 2025. New Supercenters are scheduled for Frisco, Melissa (Texas), Eagle Mountain (Utah), and Eastvale (California). Walmart will also open Neighborhood Markets in Tuscaloosa (Alabama), Milton and Pace (Florida), and convert stores in Mountain View (California) and East Windsor (New Jersey) into full Supercenters.

Grand opening celebrations will continue throughout the weekend, with special community events and experiences inviting Cypress residents to explore the new store.
