JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Encouraging people to protect their health, Winn-Dixie Stores and BI-LO have launched a flu vaccination program, which offers customers three options for getting a flu vaccine.

Dubbed "Shield Yourself," the campaign is offering flu shots without an appointment at any Winn-Dixie or BI-LO pharmacy.

The Southeast food and drug retailers, both part of BI-LO Holding, said this week that customers can choose the standard seasonal flu vaccine, a high-dose vaccine recommended for those age 65 and older, or an intradermal vaccine administered with a microneedle that’s 90% smaller than traditional needles.

Winn-Dixie noted that customers who enroll in its prescription drug plan will get a discount on flu immunizations, paying $24.99 for the regular flu shot, $29.99 for the intradermal vaccination and $44.99 for the high-dose vaccine. BI-LO customers with the chain’s discount pharmacy card also will get the reduced pricing for the flu vaccinations.

Customers getting a flu vaccine at either chain will also receive a coupon book $15 in savings on a range of health and wellness products, while supplies last.

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all people age 6 months and older should be vaccinated against the flu as soon as the vaccine becomes available," John Fegan, vice president of pharmacy, said in a statement. "We have the flu vaccine now and offer guests quick and easy options to receive it while they do their grocery shopping. With the start of school, now is the perfect time to shield your health with a flu shot."

Also to help prevent flu, Winn-Dixie and BI-LO pharmacists recommend washing hands frequently; wiping down telephones, remote controls, and door knobs with disinfectant; and keeping tissues handy to stop the spread of viruses, according to Fegan.

BI-LO Holding operates 687 Winn-Dixie and BI-LO supermarkets and 493 in-store pharmacies in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
