Meijer donated $500,000 to fund a new food marketing hub for students, faculty, and industry partners.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Meijer has announced a $500,000 donation to Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business Food Marketing Program to help fund the development of a new food marketing hub designed to foster innovation and hands-on learning.

The nearly 2,000-square-foot facility will feature flexible, collaborative workspaces for more than 75 students, along with advanced technology for category management training and industry-led workshops. The hub is intended to serve as a bridge between students, faculty, and corporate partners, offering an immersive environment where academic study meets real-world practice.

“We are proud to support WMU’s Food Marketing Program and invest in the next generation of industry leaders,” said Don Sanderson, Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer at Meijer. “At Meijer, we believe that fostering innovation and experiential learning is vital to a thriving food sector. This new hub will empower students with the skills, experiences, and connections they need to shape the future of food retail.”

Dr. Russell Zwanka, director of the food marketing program, said the partnership underscores a shared commitment to preparing students for the evolving marketplace. “We are deeply grateful to Meijer for their generous commitment to the advancement of our Food Marketing Program,” Zwanka said. “This partnership not only strengthens our ability to provide innovative, hands-on learning experiences, but also allows our students to become agile leaders in the evolving food industry.”

The WMU Food Marketing Program is nationally recognized for its comprehensive curriculum that blends academic coursework with experiential learning, internships, and networking opportunities. Alumni from the program hold leadership positions across the retail and consumer packaged goods sectors.

Meijer’s support of WMU is the latest chapter in a long-standing collaboration. The retailer has previously partnered with the program through internships, guest lectures, and mentoring opportunities, reinforcing its investment in student development and the broader food retail industry.
