Albertsons names pharmacy chief

Albertsons LLC has appointed a pharmacy chief as part of the executive structure that will emerge after it closes its acquisition of 877 stores from Supervalu Inc.

BOISE, Idaho — Albertsons LLC has appointed a pharmacy chief as part of the executive structure that will emerge after it closes its acquisition of 877 stores from Supervalu Inc.

The Boise-based food and drug retailer said in a company memo this week that
Bob Butler, currently executive vice president of operations for Albertsons LLC, will become chief operating officer, overseeing all Albertsons banner stores. The Albertsons divisions will be operated by Albertsons LLC.

Justin Dye, now chief strategy officer, will serve as COO with responsibility for the Acme, Jewel and Shaw’s/Star Markets banners and the company’s overall pharmacy operation, which will be operated by New Albertsons Inc. (NAI).

Albertsons LLC and NAI will both be operated by AB Acquisition Inc., which will be led by chief executive officer Bob Miller.

Executives Rick Navarro, chief financial officer; Paul Rowan, general counsel; Andrew Scoggin, executive vice president of human resources and public affairs; and Mark Bates, chief information officer, will retain their current functions at both Albertsons LLC and NAI.

Under the $3.3 billion deal announced in January, Supervalu agreed to sell its Albertsons, Acme, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Star Market supermarket chains and their Osco and Sav-on in-store pharmacies to AB Acquisition LLC, an affiliate of a Cerberus Capital Management LP-led investor consortium.

AB Acquisition is the parent of Albertsons LLC, which currently operates 190 supermarkets under the Albertson’s Market banner and two Super Saver Foods stores in eight states. With the acquisition, Albertsons and its subsidiaries will have 1,069 stores overall and 12 distribution centers.

Albertsons said the acquisition is slated to close in mid-March.

Also this week, Albertsons announced the formation of a new Northwest division office in Portland, Ore., that will manage operations for stores in northern Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

The company, too, named the division presidents to lead the stores being acquired from Supervalu. They include Jim Perkins for Acme Markets, William Emmons for Jewel-Osco and Shane Sampson for Shaw’s/Star Market. The division presidents for Albertsons are Dennis Bassler for the Northwest Division, Susan Morris for the Intermountain Division, Wayne Denningham for the Southern California Division, Mike Withers for the Southern Division, Shane Dorcheus for the Southwest Division,

Albertsons said the new division leaders will assume responsibility of their operating areas after the close of the Supervalu transaction, expected for the third week of March. All have worked for Albertsons LLC previously or are currently employed by the company.
