WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Patty Kumbera, chief operating officer of medication therapy management service provider OutcomesMTM, is slated to receive the inaugural Distinguished Achievement in Practice Management Award from the American Pharmacists Association and the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management.

The new award, which recognizes pharmacists who have made significant or sustained contributions in the area of practice management, will be presented to Kumbera at the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition, to be held March 1 to 4 in Los Angeles.

Kumbera co-founded OutcomesMTM and has championed the implementation of MTM services in the health care sector. A Drake University College of Pharmacy graduate, she has been active in the evolution of Medicare Part D MTM services since they were introduced in 2006. She has also urged the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and plan sponsors to realize the potential of MTM to enhance the quality of health care and rein in costs.

In addition, Kumbera and her team have pioneered a business model to expand pharmacist services and provide compensation for successful outcomes. That model, founded on the face-to-face interaction they believed was crucial to successful MTM, spawned OutcomesMTM in 1999. A decade later, in 2009, she received the Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Science’s Alumni Achievement Award for this success.

Over the past two years, Kumbera and her team implemented MTM services as part of the nation’s largest patient-centered medical home within a commercial population and in innovative Managed Medicaid MTM programs.

A key member of instrumental health care leadership forums/committees, Kumbera has spent more than 15 years advocating the value of face-to-face MTM services nationwide, OutcomesMTM said.
