Harris Teeter expands GLP-1 access

Regional grocer integrates medications, dietitians and affordability tools to support weight management.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Harris Teeter is expanding access to GLP-1 medications and related weight-management support across its pharmacy network, positioning its stores as integrated health destinations that offer prescriptions, nutrition guidance and cost-saving tools.

The retailer said customers can now access a broader range of GLP-1 and other weight-management medications at Harris Teeter Pharmacies across its markets, along with pharmacist counseling and dietitian-led nutrition support.

“Access to effective weight management support shouldn’t be complicated or cost-prohibitive,” said Lindsay Capozzziello, director of health and wellness at Harris Teeter. “At Harris Teeter, we’re committed to meeting customers where they are, with knowledgeable pharmacy teams, registered dietitians and fresh, nourishing foods that support the whole journey.”

The initiative reflects a growing push among food and drug retailers to integrate pharmacy services more directly with in-store nutrition and wellness offerings, particularly as demand for GLP-1 therapies continues to accelerate.

At the store level, Harris Teeter is emphasizing a coordinated care model that includes pharmacist consultations on how GLP-1 medications work, expected outcomes, and side-effect management, along with access to registered dietitians and curated assortments of protein- and fiber-rich foods.

The company is also highlighting affordability as a key part of its strategy. Pharmacy teams will help customers navigate manufacturer savings programs and cash-pay options. Harris Teeter said it will honor programs such as Eli Lilly’s Zepbound KwikPen self-pay savings card, where eligible, marking expanded access for self-pay patients.

In addition, customers can find complementary over-the-counter products, including protein supplements, fiber products, and vitamins, along with guidance through the retailer’s OptUP program, which uses FoodHealthScores to support healthier product selection.

The move underscores how regional grocers are leveraging pharmacy capabilities to capture a larger share of health and wellness spending, particularly in high-growth categories such as weight management, where medication, diet and ongoing support are increasingly interconnected.
