Leonard Genovese, former president and chief executive of Genovese Drug Stores, and chairman of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores from 1998 to 1999 died on November 1 at the age of 91.
The chain, which grew to 141 stores in three states, was founded in 1924 by Genovese’s grandfather Joseph in Astoria, Queens. Leonard became chairman of the company in 1978, by which time it had 50 stores with headquarters in Melville, N.Y. on Long Island.
The chain debuted in Manhattan in 1993, a year which also saw it opened its 100th store.
It was acquired five years later by Eckerd parent JC Penney for $432 million in stock and the assumption of $60 million in debt. The stores became part of Rite Aid with that company’s 2006 purchase of Eckerd.
Leonard was a leader and respected figure in the industry, remembered not only for his business acumen but also for his great humor, generosity, and deep care for others. Under his leadership, Genovese Drug Stores grew to become one of the most trusted regional drug chains in the country — built on a foundation of service, compassion, and family values.
He was a leader and a respected figure in our industry, remembered not only for his business aptitude but also for his great humor, generosity, and deep care for others.
