RALEIGH, N.C. — Kerr Drug is primed for more efficient pharmacy operations after finishing the implementation of the PDX Enterprise Pharmacy System (EPS).
The North Carolina drug chain said the system, from PDX-National Health Information Network Inc., stands to improve pharmacy workflow and productivity and provide more patient safety, while enabling the company to meet increased prescription volume and higher patient care requirements.
"We are really investing heavily in our infrastructure," Joey Dorsett, vice president and chief information officer at Kerr Drug, said in a statement. "As a regional chain, it hasn’t always been possible to be the first adopters of all the innovative technologies, but it is non-negotiable that we provide pharmacy services with the best of the best. With PDX, we are able to deliver cutting-edge solutions that improve patients’ lives through better technology."
The PDX technology enables integrated, centralized electronic pharmacy records and hones work processes and efficiencies, according to Kerr, which added that the system creates the opportunity for lower labor costs by separating the tasks of the pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
And as with the deployment of any new technology, training was also key, Dorsett noted. "We had a dedicated team of trainers ensuring that every single pharmacy associate mastered the integration of the new system," he stated. "Change is never without pain, but we knew there would be enormous dividends at the end."
The rollout of the PDX platform, too, complements Kerr’s earlier mobile pharmacy solution, the retailer added. Smartphone users can refill prescriptions, get pickup and dosage reminders, and access their prescription history from their mobile devices.
"Kerr Drug delivers cutting-edge solutions to improve our patients’ health and make their lives easier," commented Tony Civello, the drug chain’s president and chief executive officer. "The mobile option allows patients to convert their phones into medical wallets to access a wide range of our pharmacy services."
