HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Kmart Corp. has added a pet medication program to its pharmacy offerings.
The discount store chain, part of Sears Holdings Corp., said Friday that the pet medicines program will provide customers with convenient access to brand-name and generic prescription drugs to help ensure the health of their pets.
Citing figures from the American Pet Products Association, Kmart noted that over 60% of U.S. households own a pet and overall spent more than $50 billion on their pets in 2011. Kmart said that because many people see their pets as family members, offering affordable pet prescriptions in stores makes shopping for the whole family even more convenient.
"This new pet program is just another example of how we strive to make the shopping experience seamless for our customers," Ghassan Hourani, vice president and general manager of pharmacy administration for Kmart Pharmacy, said in a statement. "In addition to our wide variety of pet products, including the Kmart-exclusive Champion Breed food, toys and treats, we are thrilled that we can now offer our customers and their furry family members a one-stop shopping experience."
Kmart added that in support of National Pet Month, customers who buy a pet medication at any Kmart Pharmacy through May 26 will receive a free Purina Beneful Baked Delight or Purina Cat Treat. Pet owners shopping at Kmart stores without pharmacies also can get the free treat by spending $20 on Purina products.
