McDonald named P&G chairman; Lafley to retire

Procter & Gamble Co. chief executive officer Robert McDonald has been elected chairman, succeeding A.G. Lafley, who plans to retire early next year. P&G said Tuesday that Lafley, 62, is slated to step down from the chairman’s role on January 1 and to retire from the company on February 25.

Nutrisystem Inc. has entered a new distribution alliance with Walgreen Co. to offer its weight-loss program cards in the drug chain’s stores nationwide. The weight management product and service provider said the cards will roll out in the diet section of Walgreens stores on December 25.

Duane Reade Inc. is rolling out Sarpes Beverages’ Dream Water, a beverage designed to help people relax and fall asleep. The drug store chain will carry Dream Water and the Dream Water shot at its locations throughout New York City’s five boroughs, according to Sarpes.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Zegerid OTC as a nonprescription treatment for heartburn. The product will be marketed by Schering-Plough HealthCare Products Inc., the consumer health care division of Merck & Co.

Rite Aid Corp. posted its sixth consecutive month of same-store sales declines in November. The drug store chain said Thursday that for the five weeks ended November 28, same-store sales fell 0.8% from the prior-year period. That followed decreases of 0.5% in October and 0.3% in September.

Rite Aid Corp. has opened three Atlantic ImmediCare retail health clinics inside stores in Maryland and Delaware. The new clinics, operated by Berlin, Md.-based Atlantic General Hospital and Health System, are located at Rite Aid stores in Ocean Pines and Pocomoke City, Md., and Millsboro, Del.
