WOONSOCKET, R.I. — MinuteClinic has entered into clinical affiliations with Atlantic Health System and Hackensack University Health Network in New Jersey.

The CVS Caremark retail health clinic subsidiary said Wednesday that under the agreements, Atlantic Health System physicians will serve as medical directors for nine MinuteClinics in northern and central New Jersey (Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Union counties and parts of Essex county), while HackensackUMC doctors will be medical directors for six MinuteClinics in northeastern New Jersey (Bergen, Passaic and Hudson counties, and parts of Essex County).

Located in CVS/pharmacy drug stores, the clinics are staffed by nurse practitioners who provide treatment for common family illnesses and administer wellness and prevention services, including health condition monitoring.

MinuteClinic also will collaborate with the Atlantic and Hackensack health systems on patient education and disease management initiatives and inform patients of the services that each offers. The health networks, too, will accept patients who need a level of care not provided at MinuteClinic, and signs at the clinics will let patients know that each site has a clinical affiliation with either the Atlantic or the Hackensack health system.

"Atlantic Health System is committed to improving the health of our communities," Joseph Trunfio, president and chief executive officer of Atlantic Health System, said in a statement. "By providing access to our physicians’ expertise through MinuteClinic services, we can help members of the community to lead healthier lives, in a new, innovative way."

MinuteClinic also will start work with the Atlantic and Hackensack health networks toward integrating electronic medical record systems to streamline communication on patients’ care. With patient permission, MinuteClinic will electronically share medical histories and visit summaries with other Atlantic and Hackensack locations in the health systems’ respective areas.

"We are pleased to partner with MinuteClinic on this important clinical affiliation," stated Robert Garrett, president and CEO of HackensackUMC. "Combining our award-winning clinical expertise with the trusted reputation of MinuteClinic will undoubtedly serve as an asset to members of our local community. This affiliation is another demonstration of our commitment to providing patient-centered, efficient care, and we look forward to a longstanding relationship with MinuteClinic."

Hackensack University Health Network is the largest provider of inpatient and outpatient health services in New Jersey, according to MinuteClinic. Atlantic Health System is one of the largest nonprofit health systems in New Jersey and includes Morristown Medical Center, Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Overlook Medical Center and Newton Medical Center.
