NACDS updates members on CMS Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program rollout

NACDS is advising chain pharmacy members on the upcoming launch of the CMS Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program, a temporary demonstration that will provide eligible Medicare beneficiaries with access to certain medications beginning July 1.

WASHINGTON — The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will launch its Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program on July 1, creating a temporary pathway for eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries to access certain GLP-1 medications through Dec. 31, 2027.

In a memo to members, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores said the demonstration program will operate separately from the Medicare Part D benefit and will be administered directly by CMS through a centralized processor. Participating pharmacies will play a key role in helping beneficiaries obtain medications covered under the program.

As implementation nears, CMS has scheduled a pharmacy-focused informational webinar for June 11 from noon to 1 p.m. ET to provide additional details about the initiative. The agency said the session will cover background information on the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program, technical instructions for pharmacies filling prescriptions through the program beginning July 1, and a question-and-answer session.

NACDS said CMS has also released a pharmacy fact sheet outlining the workflow for determining beneficiary eligibility, submitting claims, supporting prior authorization requests and dispensing covered GLP-1 medications.

“NACDS continues to work closely with CMS as implementation approaches and will keep members updated as additional guidance becomes available,” the association said.

The webinar is closed to the public and media. CMS is encouraging pharmacies and stakeholders to submit questions in advance through the program’s dedicated email address.
