BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Former Wellpoint Inc. executive Dijuana Lewis has been named senior vice president of health care solutions at Walmart U.S.

Walmart said Thursday that Lewis, who spent 16 years with Wellpoint before leaving the health benefits company last fall, will play an integral role in cultivating the discount store giant’s health and wellness business.

She is charged with developing innovative product and service offerings and will work to expand and increase the efficiency of Walmart’s pharmacy and optical contract programs, according to company executives.

While at Wellpoint, Lewis held a variety of positions and was instrumental in the health insurer’s 2009 deal to sell its pharmacy benefit management unit, NextRx.

She was dismissed without cause from Wellpoint in October in a mutually agreed-upon deal that provided her with a generous severance package in exchange for agreeing to stay on for two months to help her successor.
