Winn-Dixie promotes cardiovascular health

Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. is touting its food and drug stores as a destination for consumers looking to maintain or improve their heart health.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. is touting its food and drug stores as a destination for consumers looking to maintain or improve their heart health.

The supermarket chain said Wednesday that in observance of American Heart Month during February, it’s providing ways for customers to check up on and find out more about their cardiovascular health, as well as some promotions geared toward helping people reduce their risk for coronary heart disease.

According to the retailer, each Winn-Dixie pharmacy offers free cholesterol screenings, and most stores are equipped with blood pressure machines. Winn-Dixie pharmacists recommend that consumers check their blood pressure at least once a month.

This month, Winn-Dixie also is partnering with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to offer customers a free "Treating High Cholesterol" guide available in English and Spanish.

The chain added that during February, it’s also running special promotions near the pharmacy, including a two-for-$4 deal from Quaker Oats Oatmeal, a heart-healthy option that research shows may reduce cholesterol.

“As part of the health care team, your Winn-Dixie pharmacist plays a significant role in the management and prevention of cardiovascular disease," Winn-Dixie vice president of pharmacy John Fegan said in a statement. "With pharmacies in a majority of our stores, Winn-Dixie is distinctively positioned to offer guests expert consultation, disease prevention information and medications alongside an abundant selection of heart healthy meal and dietary solutions."

Overall, Winn-Dixie operates about 380 pharmacies in its 480 supermarkets in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi.
