WOONSOCKET, R.I. — Thomas Moriarty has been named executive vice president and general counsel at CVS Caremark Corp.

CVS said Monday that Moriarty takes over from Douglas Sgarro, who retired in May after more than 14 years with the company.

Moriarty, 49, will oversee CVS Caremark’s legal department and be a member of the company’s executive committee.

Most recently, Moriarty was general counsel at biopharmaceutical firm Celgene Corp., where he was responsible for global legal strategy and served on the company’s management committee. Before that, he was general counsel and corporate secretary at Medco Health Solutions Inc. and held various positions in the office of general counsel at Merck & Co.

"We’re very excited to have Tom join our team," Larry J. Merlo, president and chief executive officer of CVS Caremark, said in a statement. "He has a broad range of business experience and legal expertise that make him a perfect fit as our executive vice president and general counsel. He is extremely knowledgeable about pharmacy health care and the health care business generally and is widely regarded as one of the most capable and experienced general counsels in corporate America."
