DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — The global healthcare supply chain management market is projected to grow from $4.13 billion in 2026 to $5.31 billion by 2031, according to a MarketsandMarkets report.
The research firm expects the market to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5.1% over the period, as healthcare organizations invest in technology to control procurement and inventory costs, improve product availability, and strengthen visibility across increasingly complex pharmaceutical and medical device supply chains.
The pharmaceutical and biotechnology segment is projected to achieve a 5.4% compound annual growth rate through 2031, the fastest growth among the product categories covered in the report. North America accounted for 40.6% of the global market in 2025.
MarketsandMarkets cited the geographic concentration of pharmaceutical manufacturing as a factor increasing the focus on supply chain resilience. Citing FDA data, the report said that as of 2025, about 53% of brand-name drug products and 69% of generic drug products distributed in the United States were manufactured outside the country, while only 9% of active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturers were based in the U.S.
Those dependencies are driving investment in demand forecasting, inventory optimization, procurement automation, supplier management, traceability, and disruption monitoring. According to the report, artificial intelligence is also increasingly used for demand planning and inventory optimization.
Services are expected to be the fastest-growing segment of the healthcare supply chain management market, with a projected CAGR of 6.3% through 2031. Demand is being driven by the need to implement and integrate new supply chain platforms with existing procurement, inventory and healthcare information systems.
The report also highlights growing investment in AI-enabled and connected supply chain systems. Recent developments include Tecsys' introduction of AI capabilities to address drug shortages, inventory waste, and compliance risk, as well as Global Healthcare Exchange's launch of an AI-powered orchestration layer that connects supply chain data and workflows across healthcare providers and suppliers.
