DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. has wrapped up its acquisition of regional drug store operator USA Drug.
Walgreens announced the closing of the $438 million deal on Monday. Under the agreement, announced in early July, Walgreens purchased 144 drug stores, mainly in the mid-South region, from Stephen L. LaFrance Holdings Inc. and members of the LaFrance family.
USA Drug recorded sales of $825 million in 2011. The company’s stores operated under the banners USA Drug, Super D Drug, May’s Drug, Med-X and Drug Warehouse and are located in Arkansas, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
The acquisition also includes corporate offices, a distribution center located in Pine Bluff, Ark., and a wholesale and private brand business.
Walgreens had previously purchased assets from USA Drug. In March 2010, Walgreens acquired prescription files and other assets of 17 Ike’s and Super D drug stores in the Memphis, Tenn., area from the regional drug chain.
